The Importance of Mowing: A Healthier, Better-Looking Lawn

Regular mowing is one of the simplest ways to keep a lawn healthy, thick, and attractive. Done correctly, it strengthens grass, reduces weeds, and helps your landscape look consistently maintained.

1) Encourages thicker, healthier growth

Mowing stimulates grass to grow laterally (it “tillers”), which helps fill in thin spots and creates a denser turf. A thicker lawn shades the soil, helping retain moisture and making it harder for weeds to take hold.

2) Helps prevent weeds and pests

Keeping grass at the right height reduces sunlight reaching weed seeds and limits their ability to germinate. Consistent mowing also helps you spot issues early—like grubs, fungus, or bare patches—before they spread.

3) Protects your lawn from stress

Cutting too short can weaken roots and make grass more vulnerable to heat and drought. A steady mowing schedule (and avoiding “scalping”) keeps the plant strong and better able to handle summer stress.

Best practices for mowing

• Follow the “one-third rule”: never remove more than 1/3 of the blade at a time. • Keep mower blades sharp for a clean cut. • Mow when the grass is dry when possible. • Change mowing direction to reduce ruts and encourage upright growth. • Leave clippings (mulch mowing) when they’re short—they return nutrients to the soil.

When to mow

Growth rate changes with the season. In spring, you may need to mow weekly (or more). In hot, dry periods, mowing less often and keeping grass slightly taller can help protect roots and conserve moisture.
